OpenAI Launches GPT-5 for Free Users with Tiered Access and Enhanced Features

OpenAI unveiled GPT-5, its latest AI model, on August 7, 2025, integrating it into ChatGPT for all 700 million weekly free users—albeit with usage caps. Free-tier subscribers can send 10 messages every five hours and receive one "GPT-5 Thinking" response daily, while Pro and Plus users gain expanded access to GPT-5 Pro and advanced features, respectively.

Developers can license three variants—GPT-5, GPT-5-mini, and GPT-5-nano—at $1.25 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with customizable response parameters. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, touts GPT-5 as "the best model in the world," rivaling PhD-level proficiency in coding and writing. The release intensifies competition with rivals like Elon Musk’s Grok.

Notably, GPT-5 introduces four chat personalities (cynic, robot, listener, nerd) and empowers programmers to build websites, apps, and games via natural-language prompts. The update aims to humanize interactions and curb excessive agreeability in responses.
